UNIT 4: WEATHERING, EROSION & MASS MOVEMENT

(LITHOSPHERE)  7 days

NC Standards

EEn.2.1.3 Explain how natural actions such as weathering, erosion (wind, water and gravity), and soil formation affect Earth's surface.
EEn.2.1.4 Explain the probability of and preparation for geohazards such as landslides, avalanches, earthquakes, and volcanoes in a particular area based on available data.
EEn.2.2.1 Explain the consequences of human activities on the lithosphere (such as mining, deforestation, agriculture, overgrazing, urbanization, and land use) past and present.

Essential Questions

1. Describe how mechanical weathering breaks rocks down.
2. Describe how chemical weathering breaks rocks down.
3. Name three factors that effect the rate of weathering.
4. What are mass movements?
5. What are the causes of mass movements?
6. What are the different type of mass movements?
7. What are some things humans can do to mitigate the threat of mass movements?
8 . What are the consequences of mining on the lithosphere?
9. How do you predict locations of future earthquakes and volcanoes?
10. What preparations and prior knowledge would you need to protect yourself from geohazards including landslides, earthquakes, tsunamis, sinkholes, groundwater pollution, and flooding?
11. What are the consequences of deforestation, agriculture, overgrazing, and urbanization on the lithosphere?
