UNIT 2:  ASTRONOMY

(7 days)
Who has not felt a sense of awe while looking up at the nights sky filled with stars and wondered "what else was is there"?  Who has not asked themselves if ours is the only planet that supports life? Who has not pondered the nature of the planets, stars, galaxies, and the Universe itself? Astronomy is a science that seeks to explain everything that we observe in the Universe, from the phases of the moon to distant galaxies. By studying that which is beyond our own planet, we can understand where we came from, where we are going and better understand the plant we live on.

NC Standards

EEn.1.1.1 Explain the Earth's motion through space, including precession, nutation, the barycenter, and its path about the galaxy.
EEn.1.1.2 Explain how the Earth's rotation and revolution about the Sun affect its shape and is related to seasons and tides.
EEn.1.1.3 Explain how the sun produces energy which is transferred to the Earth which is transferred to the Earth by radiation.
EEn.1.1.4 Explain how incoming solar energy makes life possible on Earth.

Essential Standards

1. How have ideas about our solar system changed over time?
2. Why does Earth have night and day?
3. Why does Earth have seasons?
4. What causes the phases of the moon?
5. How does the angle between the earth, sun and moon determine the phase of the moon?
6. What causes the seasons?
7. Why does the path of the Sun in the sky change throughout the year?
8. How does the path of the sun affect the seasons and day and night at different latitude throughout the earth?
